Being a dentist, I am one link between Valitics and real world applications. Reciprocal links occur when one website links to another and vice versa. The goal of any external link is to send search engine bots (How search engines retrieve data) to your site. This is often called "link juice." The more link juice going to your site the better chance you have of ranking well.
I often receive offers for reciprocal links from other dentists, or should I say dental web companies being paid to deliver search engine optimization. They typically show me a link to a page on their site with my practice website and others. Since these are typically nice sites, it looks enticing. After looking around, I noticed that I could not find how this page was linked to any other pages on the site. No links to any other pages = no link juice = no benefit. So beware of offers for reciprocal links. Don't give away your link juice if you are not getting anything in return.
Another helpful hint - Create great/unique content, products or services and it will be easier to get people to enjoy your site.
